What it means
The road drops sharply and your vehicle will gain speed by itself. Long descents can overheat brakes, which is especially dangerous in a loaded vehicle.
What to do
Shift to a lower gear before you start down. Don't keep your foot on the brake the whole way, stay in control, and leave room to the vehicle in front.
How to read warning signs
Warning signs are red-bordered triangles pointing up. They don't order you to do anything: they tell you what's coming so you can slow down and get ready.
More warning signs
- Steep ascent ahead
- Road narrows ahead
- Road narrows from right
- Road narrows from left
- River bank or quayside
- Uneven road surface ahead
